SAN MARCOS, TX, June 5, 2013 - Grande Communications, the Texas-based broadband communications company that offers internet, TV and phone services, recently hosted a reusable bag design contest in coordination with Austin’s Lee Elementary School and today has announced the winning designs.
Grande created the project to help promote and support the use of reusable shopping bags, in accordance with the Austin City Council’s single-use carryout bag ordinance that took effect citywide earlier this spring. The design contest challenged Lee students to incorporate Grande’s slogan, "Here For You," into their own creative and colorful 8 ½ x 11 illustration or painting. The contest received over 45 entries from Lee’s after school program, and submissions were judged by a select group of Grande employees.
"Grande was delighted to introduce its first ever student-designed reusable bags to help engage students in using art to encourage their creativity while urging Austinites to use reusable bags in their everyday lives," said Matt Murphy, president of Grande Communications.
Lee Elementary School third grader Eliza created the first place winning design that will be featured on one side of the bag. The honorable mention designs that will be featured on the other side of the bag included drawings by Lee kindergartener Julia, third grader Caroline, second grader Drew and third grader Natalie.
"We want to thank all the students of Lee Elementary who participated in the contest and the school for partnering with us on this project," Murphy added.
The students' winning designs will be featured on Grande's Facebook and Twitter pages. Grande intends to use the bags at Austin area community and sales-driven events. Grande distributed bags to students and teachers at Lee yesterday during a special presentation where certificates of appreciation were presented to students with winning designs.
"Since their early days in the central Austin area, Grande Communications has chosen to be an integral part of the Hyde Park, Hancock, and North University neighborhoods - and our families and kids have benefitted not only from their fabulous services but also from their generosity. They continue to invest in Lee to help us achieve our fundraising goals to enhance our technology, classroom, playground and faculty assets," said Kelsey Evans, president of the Lee Elementary School PTA. "Thank you Grande for many years of loyal, creative and significant support."
